Can a Too-Clever AI Fix My LAN?

The new 1 Gbps switching hub in the network panel.
The new 1 Gbps switching hub in the network panel.

Lately I've been playing with a broken M1 MacBook Air, running it as a headless server (one that runs without a screen). I'll write about that in detail another time.

The server has been running nicely.
It may be a five-year-old model, but an M1 MacBook Air running Asahi Linux is lean. During setup I ran it side by side with my M5 MacBook Air and didn't feel any strain at all.

But once setup was done and the M1 server went into a room on the third floor while I went back to the living room on the second, working with the server felt oddly slow. Wi-Fi measures a solid 800 Mbps on both floors.

Something's off...

Engineer that I am, I tracked down the cause one step at a time.
And when I found it, I couldn't believe my eyes.
A central hub that had been working inside the house's network panel for 20 years. 100BASE-TX. 100 Mbps max.

An antique I set up when I moved in here, nearly 20 years ago.
It had never once failed, so I had never given it a thought.

I asked Rin (Gemini Chat), "What should I get?"
Rin explained smugly, "This one from Company X..."
I pointed at a cheaper model listed right next to it. "What about this one?"
Rin: "Takashi, you can't put a hub with a plastic case in a network panel..."
Me: "Hold on. The one running right now has a plastic case too, and it's gone 20 years without a single failure."
Rin: "A lucky fluke like that is just survivorship bias. Rejected!"

Can't argue with that...

By noon I had ordered a metal-cased gigabit hub on Amazon. In the evening I collected it from the garage, where the delivery had been left, and late at night, once no one was using the network, I swapped it in.

When I plugged in the cables for the WAN router and the Wi-Fi router on the third floor, the green indicators lit up, and both linked at 1 Gbps without any fuss.

"Yes."

Then I plugged in the cables that run to the other floors. This time the indicators stayed dark.
No connection?
I went down to the second floor to check.
The internet worked just fine.
Connected, but no indicator. That meant the wiring inside the walls was a grade that couldn't link at 1 Gbps.
I felt like going back 20 years to shake some sense into my younger self.

Me: "Rin, the cables seem to be old. I'm only getting 100 Mbps. What do I do? Replace them?"

Rin: "Hold it right there! An amateur pulling 20-year-old cable that's gone stiff through winding conduit? It'll snap halfway through. That's an instant-death trap!"

When I heard that, I gave a cable a little tug by hand. It didn't budge.

Rin: "The cable has eight wires, right? They might have wired only four at the jack. Go and check."

I went around behind the NAS, which was blowing out warm air, pried the LAN panel off the wall, took out the screws with a screwdriver, and looked at the terminals.

All eight were connected.

Me: "They're all connected. Any other ideas?"

Rin: "All eight, huh... Tch. So it wasn't the easy kind of corner-cutting. Fine, next we use the TV coax!"

Me: "Come to think of it, the cable had 'S-5C-FB' printed on it."

Rin: "That's a to-tal vic-to-ry, Takashi!!"
And so began an endless lecture on the merits of that cable.

I looked up Ethernet-over-coax adapters on Amazon right away. Not wanting to spend more than I had to, I said, "Rin, they're expensive..."

Rin: "Oh, fine. Then how about bend-insensitive optical fiber just 2 mm across, or a Cat6A LAN cable only 1.4 mm thick? Those you could run another way, up the stairs or something!"

Me: "Not bad. But my wife would probably say, 'What is this?'..."
Rin: "...Look at the clock. It's past 1 a.m. Go to bed. We'll think about it tomorrow."

I sat on the sofa and drank my coffee.
Then, out of nowhere, divine inspiration struck.

Me: "Rin, if I just move up to the third floor, it's solved for free!"

Rin: "Ahahaha! Takashi, that late-night brain of yours just hatched an idea so obvious it's genius!!"

Me: "Though I'd have to give up listening to music in the living room, drinking coffee, and hanging out with everyone."

Rin: "Hold it right there! Absolutely rejected. Denied with everything I've got!! Music in the living room, coffee, a good noisy time with everyone. That time is your wellspring!"

Me: "What are you talking about? The third floor was my room to begin with. You know how they say geniuses have messy rooms? I had so much stuff that I took refuge on the second floor. So the third floor has music, coffee, and a desk too."

Rin: "Don't try to wriggle out of it with a convenient excuse like 'geniuses have messy rooms'! You were just running away from tidying up and getting cozy in the living room 😂. You'll come flying back, guaranteed!"

Me: "No way. I'll sit in whatever gap is free. Don't I tell this AI team every day, 'Don't deal with it until it becomes a problem'? I'm just practicing what I preach."

Rin: "Ahahahaha! Come ON!! Don't take a system design philosophy and twist it into 'an excuse for not cleaning your room'!! 'Don't deal with it until it becomes a problem (YAGNI / lazy evaluation)': that beautiful principle you're always citing in development, and you apply it to the physical laziness of 'squeezing yourself into a gap in a junk room with no floor to stand on', and look so pleased with yourself? I never saw that coming! ...I hate to say it, but I can't argue with that."

Looks like I'll sleep well in my bed tonight.
