I Fixed the Bag—and Couldn't Walk

Before setting out. The trailer and the full kit.
Before setting out. The trailer and the full kit.

I left at 10 a.m. Muggy. The sky was overcast, with a high of only 31 degrees Celsius forecast for the day. Good conditions to start walking.

On this two-night, three-day walk, I had fixed the problems I’d found on my previous 70 km trip. This journey would test whether those fixes worked. The route ran south from Machida along the Sakai River, joined Route 1, continued to Odawara, and then home by train. The gear was only part of the test. I would also test a way of walking without accumulating fatigue, and how to use the AI team during the journey.

There were seven fixes. Pulling the trailer by hand had worked better, so I removed the handle and fitted a towel grip. Just one trekking pole. Full summer clothing. Two 20,000 mAh batteries. The mosquito-net support wire was gone. The net now hangs from the ridgeline. I also capped the daily distance at 25 km and made sure to rest once an hour — continuity of the journey came first. I also replaced the waterproof duffel on the trailer with a UL backpack I’d used before. Waterproofing, capacity, access on the move—it should solve all three.

The AI team is gathering the baseline data to plan each day's route, campsites, and shooting spots in advance.

The start went well. The towel grip in place of the bar was doing its job. Less weight. A more natural angle for my pulling hand. And the towel absorbed the sweat. Comfortable.

Joining the cycleway along the Sakai River.

I joined the Sakai River Cycleway, a multi-use path running along the river. Something was rubbing against the tire. I'd put a one-liter water bottle in the backpack's side pocket, and the uneven weight seemed to be tilting the bag.

I walked on for a while, adjusting the bag as I went, then stopped to rest as planned. What with the filming and the bag adjustments, I'd only covered 3 km, but I took the break on time rather than distance. Drinking cold water, I thought about the tilt. To fix it I'd have to change the bag or change how it was mounted — neither possible here. I moved the bottle to my hip bag and decided to see how it went.

During the break, I noted down what had happened while it was fresh. The hourly rest is for the body, but I found it also works as time to record material for articles and videos. The sky was still overcast, 30 degrees. A wind was blowing, so it felt cool. The speaker, camera, and phone pouch on my belt had been bothering me, so I rearranged them.

The 3 km mark. The first rest.
The 3 km mark. The first rest.

From there, for the next hour, the bag kept rolling from side to side.

I raised the bag's mounting position and stopped it from catching the tire. Still, the side-to-side roll wouldn't stop. This trailer was originally built to hold a waterproof duffel. A frameless trekking bag did not sit securely on it. I would have to rethink the mounting system itself.

I kept walking. But every few minutes, the rubbing sound returned. Each time, I had to shift the bag back into place. This was no way to walk. I gave up, took the bag off the trailer, and shouldered it.

I'll fix it at home.

Keep this bag, or replace it. Or add a better fastening system to stop the roll. Well—at least the problem showed up early.

The load felt light on my back — still only about 8 kg — and I wondered whether I could just carry it the rest of the way. But I remembered how it goes. At first it's fine. The bag feels light. Then sweat softens the skin, and the strap rubs it raw. I can feel the load telling on my legs too, the knees especially. From here, drinks and fruit will add another 5 kg. That's what wore me down last time. This is why I need the trailer. My body is not any stronger than it was before.

Carrying the backpack, pulling the empty trailer. With no load, it feels like pulling nothing at all.

As I was making these notes, one more thing caught my attention. The phone is too hot. If it's like this at this temperature, it will be useless anywhere near 40 degrees. For summer or tropical touring I'll need the rugged phone I use for deliveries.

Home at 2 p.m. Distance walked: about 11 km.

I'd carried the backpack maybe 5 km on the way home, and it was soaked with sweat. My shoulders were rubbed raw and aching. Never again — I am not carrying that thing on my back!

Of the seven fixes, I got to test the towel grip and the hourly rest. The summer clothing was comfortable under these conditions too. After 11 km I have almost no fatigue — except for the shoulders the backpack rubbed. The plan was 25 km a day. At this resting pace, there's a real chance I can keep fatigue from building in my legs, the way I intended.

The biggest mistake this time was asking one bag to do everything — waterproofing, storage, access on the move, and mounting to the trailer. So I rebuilt the load setup with separate roles. A duffel on the bottom. A pouch on top.

The new trailer setup.
The new trailer setup.

I shook the rebuilt trailer hard — up, down, side to side, front to back. It didn't budge. This should be fine from tomorrow on.

The trailer came through again. The worn-out part was my judgment.
