  • 距離: 約28km(5:10–13:10)、再出発後3日間合計84km

Past Odawara, On to Hakone (Walking Test, Day 3)

Shiroyama Park in the early morning.
Shiroyama Park in the early morning.

Up at 4:40. The sky brightening and the birds starting up — it's the same by the sea. Outside the tarp, a solid sheet of cloud. Anglers already dotted the beach. 24 degrees, almost cool. The tarp was damp from the sea wind, but condensation was no problem. The wind had been strong overnight, though. Good thing I had pitched it the right way. I need to read the vegetation around me and work out where the wind will come from.

One battery empty, the other at 75%. Three days — that is what they last. Left at 5:10.

Before 6:00 I reached Shiroyama Park — a handy park with toilets, benches, and a water tap near the entrance; I've used it before. Breakfast, same as yesterday: oatmeal, nuts, protein powder. I washed the jar and the spork at the tap, shaved at the washstand, put on sunscreen. I cover a lot of skin, so it goes fast — the tube won't last a week. Maybe I should cover more skin with the leg covers. It's a trade-off against how good bare skin feels.

Over breakfast I studied today's route. Odawara is only 14 km. Continue to Hakone-Yumoto and it's 25. If this is a test, then today should be another 25. Left at 6:40.

The morning clouds vanished completely and the sun started grilling my back. Barely 7 a.m. and already seriously hot. 27 degrees — really!?

The backs of my knees hurt a little when I started walking, but after fifteen minutes I felt nothing. The quads that hurt to the touch at noon on day two haven't hurt since. Start out slow; when a part of the body speaks up, rest it early. This seems to be the way.

Ten years or so ago, I would have walked straight through all of it — "I can still move." The damage from those years is still with me, in various places. Traveling under my own power makes things plain: if I don't listen to my body's voice, the journey can't continue.

8:00. Nowhere shaded to sit. Looking down toward the coast I could see a park — and no road leading to it. I walked on, disappointed, until I found a side path at the bottom of a slope. Backtracking a little along the shore, I came out at that park. Finally. A longer rest, then.

I crossed the Sakawa River. It's wide, and the bridge was cool with wind. Across the river is Odawara's old castle town — and there, no wind at all. A mugginess like warmed air that has settled in and stayed. 32 degrees. At every red light I did knee bends and checked my legs. Tightness and mild pain in the quads and behind the knees. A longer rest was due. I would have liked to stop right around there, but Odawara Castle was 1.5 km ahead. Get there, and there would be something cold. Guaranteed.

The kakigori I met after walking through the heat — superb.
The kakigori I met after walking through the heat — superb.

10:40, 18 km, Odawara Castle. I climbed to the keep plaza, then ordered Uji matcha shaved ice at the teahouse just beside it. Cold and delicious! After thirty minutes I checked my legs by touch — no pain. I changed from sandals to running shoes for the rest of the way, to compare how the two felt while walking.

From Odawara toward Hakone the road climbs, so I started using the trekking pole. My hands wouldn't stop sweating, and the backs of them stung. More sunscreen. I always wear gloves on the bicycle; I should wear them walking too. All the more when using a pole.

The trailer in front of the station.
The trailer in front of the station.

The view opened up all at once. A big river on the left. The sulfur smell of hot springs. And ahead on the right, Hakone-Yumoto Station. Made it. Short as this test journey was, the end of a journey is a lonely thing. In front of the station, I took a photo of the trailer with the station building behind it.

"This trip was mostly for you. You did well out there."

Inside the station, a limited express for Machida was leaving in three minutes. I rushed to buy a ticket and hurried through the gates as fast as I could without flipping the trailer. "Still thirty seconds" — I grabbed a drink from a vending machine and dashed into the nearest car. The train pulled out at once. From my seat, past the trailer, I filmed the scenery streaming past the window. 1:10 p.m., about 28 km. Mission complete.

Log (Day 3)

  • Distance: about 28 km (5:10–13:10); 84 km over the three days since the restart
  • Temperature: 24–32°C
  • Footwear: sandals → running shoes (at Odawara Castle)
  • Failures serious enough to stop the walk: none (the pouch drop and the spacer crack go on the at-home list)
  • Perceived fatigue was strongest on day one, and eased each day after

Next: the design story that came out of these three days.
