Walking Past Where I Stopped Yesterday (Walking Test, Day 1)
I left home at 10 a.m., through the same gate, the same framing as yesterday. The only difference was the load on the trailer. A 30-liter duffel on the bottom, a pouch on top. The new system, rebuilt with the roles separated.
Sunny today. Already 33 degrees, with a forecast high of 35. In Thailand, where it tops 40, I had a rule: don't walk between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. I set off with that in mind.
The new system runs well. No wobble in the load; it follows quietly behind me. I switch pulling hands from time to time. Could this double as strength training for the arms and grip? I catch myself thinking things like that. In the residential streets I tried mounting a selfie stick on the pull handle. That should give a good view of the trailer and my legs.
I joined the Sakai River Cycleway, a multi-use path along the river. Hot enough that many people out walking carried parasols. In the river stood a pure-white bird. An egret, maybe. Cooling off? Or hunting something under the water? The sound of the river and the breeze felt good.
Four kilometers in, I finally found shade and rested in a small park just off the river. This trip I've switched to sunscreen on bare skin, which makes the breeze flowing through the trees feel even better. I carry two vacuum-insulated bottles now: 500 ml kept at hand, and one liter with ice inside the bag. With this, I should be able to keep walking even if the heat goes on.
Noon. I set the camera down at the spot where I turned back yesterday and filmed myself walking past it. The spot where I stopped yesterday — today I passed it without incident. That was a relief.
12:30, 8 km. At Minami-machida Tsuruma Park I took off my shoes and let shoes and feet dry together. My hand bottle was running low, so I topped it up from the iced bottle on the trailer.
I crossed Route 246. It's the big road running along the south side of Machida, my town — once across it, I finally feel I've left home ground. A little further on, a sign: "Route 1 — 18.5 km." These markers stand every 500 meters, which makes it easy to know where I am.
1:40 p.m., 12.5 km. Resting in the shade, I looked at my arm covers and saw a white residue on the fabric. Salt, maybe, left behind where the sweat dried. Salt candies alone may not keep up with the minerals I'm losing. My arches feel like they're spreading, too. This is no hurried journey. More rests, then.
On the far side of the river I noticed a row of town houses, all the same shape. I've ridden this road dozens of times by bicycle and never once noticed them. The same place shows you a completely different landscape at a different speed. I've been through this many times, and the surprise is fresh every time.
At a FamilyMart I bought a protein bar, blocks of ice, and a drink, and refilled my bottle outside the store. I could feel fatigue building in my inner thighs, where I hurt myself last time. I slowed the pace a little. The older I get, the more important it becomes to catch what the body is saying, and not to miss it.
The fingers of my free hand — the one not pulling the trailer — were starting to swell. It swings all day, so centrifugal force might be causing blood and lymph to pool in the fingertips. Maybe the same thing happens in the feet, and that is why they start to hurt. This time the shoes are sized and shaped with that in mind, so I'll be fine.
At 5 p.m., at a clever little rest area made from large tree stumps, I went over my body checking for anything that hurt. The back of the knee — the top of the calf, to be exact — hurt a little. Walking means bending and straightening the knee all day long; that's just how it is. Only a few kilometers left today. Slow and easy will do.
Evening. Time to find a place to sleep. The park along the river — a wide lawn, but no trees for a hammock. The park away from the river that Rin had recommended — a stadium, and too many people. Managed parks are hopeless. I bought bananas, tofu, and natto at a Lawson and headed for the last candidate, a hilltop park I had picked myself. Up the wooden stairs, carrying the trailer by hand.
At the top, kids were playing soccer. I looked around. This looked workable. I ate first, charged my gear, and waited for everyone to leave.
6:30 p.m., about 28 km. A little more distance than planned, but I had rested well, and I had no obvious physical problems.
By 7:30 everyone was gone. Using a Maglite, I hung the hammock, rigged the ridgeline, and hung the mosquito net from it. Lying inside, the breeze was cool and it felt wonderful. Usually this is when I would edit the Insta360 footage and post to Facebook. Tonight I'm just going to sleep. 8 p.m.
