Is This Habit Still Working? Questioning My One Meal a Day Routine
Until yesterday, I ate just one meal a day: dinner. I had kept that up for nearly fifteen years. It is an intermittent fasting method called OMAD (one meal a day), and it was said to support cellular autophagy and growth hormone secretion by keeping a long enough fasting window. In practice, by adopting this method I have kept my weight and blood pressure stable and completed grueling bicycle and walking journeys spanning thousands of kilometers. Even now, at 63, I ride around 70 km every day on delivery work for services like UberEats, and I calmly plan 30 km walking trips. My body has entered old age, but my head is still in its forties. I thought of this "dinner only" (OMAD) style as my strongest engine.
To be clear, what I write here is only my personal impression. I do not know what actually caused what, or whether there was a precise causal relationship at all.
But lately, as I have occasionally written on this blog, I have noticed more and more cases where my body's ability to recover has weakened. Then today, a YouTube video that happened to drift into my recommendations ( https://youtu.be/NcT-Qj7bjgQ?si=jYfuL4QNvdGzzyyQ ) gave me a jolt. It discussed how bodily functions change with age—the body clock and muscle response—and the adverse effects of fasting. I had known the general tendency of physical decline with age as an isolated piece of knowledge. But I had never connected it with "my own fasting, the one that had succeeded for so many years."
This was exactly the state an AI falls into when it "holds the knowledge in its database, yet cannot connect the context and produce the right output."
Of course, I do not take the video's claims at face value. But I can understand that I need to cast a doubtful eye on continuing to apply a protocol meant for someone in their forties to a body in its sixties.
So I immediately had Gemini DeepResearch investigate the matter. The result is shared here ( https://share.gemini.google/XExVqBr1ZFqt ). The first thing the report pointed out was that my activity level deviates far from the norm for my age group—an "excess," an outlier. Handling this much activity, and on top of that narrowing my eating window to an extreme, pushes the system heavily toward muscle loss. And since I am vegan, all the more so in my case. Indeed, I had felt that my muscle was not growing as much as I assumed it would. Still, the fact that I can now run an investigation "tailored to my own particular situation" in an instant—thank goodness for AI.
That being the case, there is only one thing to do from here: a "verification" using my own body. I have always done this, and I will keep doing it. I know well from experience that physiological responses in particular do not go well if you simply follow general statistical data. Fortunately, my daily activity level is consistently high, and I have an abundance of parameters I can measure at home—weight, fatigue, leg circumference, blood pressure, heart rate. Since I mostly cook for myself, controlling the variables is easy too.
All right, it is decided. From today I abandon the long-cherished habit of eating only dinner. I shift to a morning-evening eating pattern: breakfast before 8 a.m., dinner at 6 p.m. During intense daytime exercise, I take in not just water but also protein, little and often. As for the new challenge of "how to secure enough protein at every meal on a vegan diet," I will have my AI agent team design the menu. I will run this system for a few months, observe the logs, keep what works, and simply patch and fix what does not.
By the way, this experiment relies on AI from start to finish. The video that made me aware of the problem. The DeepResearch I immediately set to work investigating. The agent team that will design the menu from here.
The kind of AI-assisted custom health consultation I did here is certain to increase from now on. But neither AI nor experts are infallible. Take fasting, the very theme of this article. Early discussions often did not give enough weight to age. The finer conditions tend to become visible only later. And there will always be the question of where this AI's, or this expert's, knowledge came from, and what biases it carries.
What matters even more is whether that knowledge is correctly connected to "my own context"—my age, activity level, diet, and daily rhythm. The single point where I stumbled, and where anyone who uses AI from now on will stumble, is exactly this one.
So the skill people really need when using AI is not how to write prompts or how to operate the system. Those skills rest on the premise that the AI's or the expert's answer is correct. Instead of assuming the answer is right, the more important skill is to connect it to one's own context and evaluate it. That will not change no matter how far AI advances.
Improving the trailer, tuning my body, evaluating an AI's research—in the end, they all follow the same procedure. Observe, form a hypothesis, test, look at the logs, and fix. An AI's answer or an expert's answer is no more than one piece of input data entering that procedure. Whether to adopt it as is, or to reconnect it to my own context and re-evaluate it, is always my job.
